Travel in the World Heritage Area

You can visit Lånan in the World Heritage Area on guided boat tours in the summer, take the scheduled boat to Skogsholmen or paddle alone between islands and reefs. The tours are on a safe boat with local guides on board. Each of the islands has its own hosts who welcome visitors, share their history and offer locally produced food. For more information, visit Visit Vega.

There are many possibilities, but remember that all traffic must be on nature's terms. Visitors in their own boats are asked to take special care during the breeding season from April 15 to July 31, and to keep their speed low close to land and in the straits between the islands. According to the protection regulations, animal and bird life, including nesting sites, are protected against damage, destruction and unnecessary disturbance. There is a traffic ban in Lånan/Skjærvær nature reserve from April 15 to July 31. Dog owners are asked not to bring dogs ashore in the bird cliffs in Vegaøyan during the breeding season. The leash requirement applies from April 1 to October 1. Tents are not permitted in Muddvær, Skjærvær, Flovær, Lånan, Holandsosen and Kjellerhaugvatnet, as well as all the islands within Lånan/Skjærvær nature reserve.

Pedestrian map

In connection with the preparation of the visitor strategy for the protected areas on Vega in 2020, knowledge was gathered to create a vulnerability map for bird life in the Vegaøyan World Heritage Area. The visitor map shows where it is vulnerable at sea. The breeding season (green area on the map) lasts from April 15 to August 31. Moth season (blue area on the map) is the time of year when greylag geese and ducks gather on the lake to shed old feathers. Then they are unable to fly. In our areas, this time is from the end of June/July to September. During these times, those traveling on sea and land must show extra consideration for the already hard-pressed seabirds that have chosen our area to carry out this year's nesting and moulting.

The use of jet skis, drones and surfboards is not permitted in the protected areas on Vega.
