Protected areas
Vega municipality has local management of the protected areas within the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site.
On May 5, 2011, the Ministry of the Environment delegated the management authority of the protected areas in Vega municipality to Vega verneområdestyre, which will safeguard the conservation values and the conservation purpose of the protected areas on Vega. The protected areas are managed by the Vega Protected Area Board, with Jannike Wika as the board's secretary and case manager.

Vega conservation area council is part of the Management Hub, together with the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate and the Vegaøyan World Heritage Foundation, which is now located in the Vega World Heritage Center.
A total of 22 percent of the World Heritage Site is protected as nature conservation areas or under the Cultural Protection Act. Overall, the protected areas are of international value:

All traffic in the protected areas must take place on nature's terms. According to the protection regulations, animal and bird life, including nesting sites, are protected against damage, destruction and unnecessary disturbance.
Landing is prohibited in Lånan/Skjærvær nature reserve from April 15 to July 31 (i.e. the uninhabited islands around Lånan and Skjærvær).
Dog owners are requested to avoid bringing dogs ashore in the bird cliffs in Vegaøyan during the breeding season. The leash requirement applies from April 1 to October 1.
