With world heritage as a recurring theme
The municipal plan for Vega municipality was adopted on 19 December 2024, with world heritage as a main focus area and a common theme. The municipal plan also includes a new management plan for the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site.
Vega Municipality has spent the last two years working on revising the community section of the municipal plan, and the plan was unanimously adopted by the municipal council on December 19. This happened after the administration had incorporated input from the consultation round of 32 submissions, as well as meetings with municipal employees, clubs and associations, and a public meeting. The goal has been to ensure local participation.
The plan is the first in Norway with world heritage as a consistent theme and with an included management plan for the world heritage area; prepared according to UNESCO's tool for the preservation of natural and cultural heritage: Enhancing our heritage 2.0
World Heritage as the main goal
World Heritage is one of four main goals and the plan states:
Main objective 4 Vegaøyan World Heritage and Vega in the world – justification: We shall preserve the Vegaøyan World Heritage and the opportunities that arise from it. The State Party and regional authorities shall be challenged in their roles towards a local community that lives with and from world heritage.
We will communicate and inform about Vega and the municipality's attractiveness. The competition for people's attention is great - we are looking towards new media and arenas to reach new potential immigrants. Vega municipality will take greater responsibility for climate change and contribute to achieving the global goals for reduced emissions. Increased food production is a contribution to the whole world.
In 2025, Vega Municipality will begin work on creating a new spatial plan for the municipality.
