VEGAØYAN WORLD HERITAGE FOUNDATION

World Heritage in young hands

UNESCO's World Heritage Convention places great emphasis on communicating World Heritage to children and young people so that they understand why their home, natural or cultural heritage has been awarded World Heritage status.

This kind of understanding and commitment is the best starting point for taking care of the world heritage in the present and future. The Vegaøyan Foundation therefore sets aside money in its budget to support the work taking place locally. The foundation contributes funds for a position as an educator with special responsibility for children and young people at the Vega World Heritage Center. The Foundation was also a driving force behind the funding of a MakerSpace in the World Heritage Center. The room is well-equipped to inspire creativity and entrepreneurship and was funded in part by sponsorship from Samfunnsløftet to Sparebank1 Nord-Norge. Other good contributors to the children and young people's initiative have been Nordland County Council and the UNESCO Commission.

Classes from upper secondary schools in Brønnøysund and Mosjøen and the primary school on Vega spent a few years at Skogsholmen learning about cultural landscape management. In recent years, this has taken place on Vega or in Emårsøy.

In recent years, the foundation has collaborated with Vega School, Brønnøysund Upper Secondary School and Vefsn Upper Secondary School on various projects:

  • Camp at Vega Kystgård for 10th grade at Vega school
  • Project about the eider tradition in Lånan
  • Program in the Creator's Workshop in Vega World Heritage Center in collaboration with Vega school and other schools
  • Conservation project in Vegaøyan and on Vega

The foundation and the World Heritage Center collaborate with Helgeland Museum on arrangements for classes from Brønnøy that come to Vega on two-day trips.
