Management plan for Vegaøyan World Heritage Site

On December 19, 2024, the Vega Municipal Council adopted a new management plan for the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site. It is part of the municipal plan's community section, which was adopted at the same municipal council meeting.

The municipality shows that the management plan for the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site is part of the community component because the developments of the local community and the World Heritage Site are closely linked to each other.

In main objective 4 Vegaøyan World Heritage and Vega in the world, the Vega municipal council has decided that:

  • We will preserve the Vegaøyan World Heritage Site and the opportunities that arise from it. The State Party and regional authorities will be challenged on their roles towards a local community that lives with and from the World Heritage Site.
  • We will communicate and inform about Vega and the municipality's attractiveness. The competition for people's attention is great - we are looking towards new media and arenas to reach new potential immigrants.
  • Vega Municipality will take greater responsibility for climate change and contribute to achieving global goals for reduced emissions.
  • Increased food production is a contribution to the entire world.

In 2025, work will begin to specify measures to be able to follow up on the objectives in the management plan. Vega Municipality will do this work in collaboration with the Vegaøyan World Heritage Foundation and Vega Protected Area Board .

Vega Protected Area Board In 2025, management plans will also be created for each individual protected area within the World Heritage area.
