VEGAØYAN WORLD HERITAGE FOUNDATION

Management plan for Vegaøyan World Heritage Site

The management plan for Vegaøyan World Heritage Site (2015 - 2022) will form the basis for a positive development in the World Heritage Site that safeguards the natural and cultural landscape values. Its objective is to safeguard and further develop traditional activities. It will also help to lay the foundation for a positive development for the local community based on sustainable use.

The management plan will be revised, but it has not yet been decided who will be responsible for the work. It is possible that it will become part of the municipal plan for Vega.

The first edition of the management plan was prepared for the period 2004 - 2010. The new management plan was approved by the Norwegian Environment Agency in 2014.

The current management plan is structured around individual themes. The main focus is on the themes that are most important for preserving the values that form the basis for the nomination. These are Grazing/grazing landscapes and vegetation, Dune management, Marine environment, Cultural monuments and building heritage, Bird life, Communication and Tourism/visitor management. The management plan is followed by an action plan for these themes that will be rolled out every 3 years.

Dune management and Grazing/haymaking landscape and vegetation are the themes that require the most activity for the values to be maintained. These have therefore been given the greatest weight.
