VEGAØYAN WORLD HERITAGE FOUNDATION
The Vegaøyan World Heritage Foundation has purchased the island of Gangarøy
The Vegaøyan World Heritage Foundation has purchased the island of Gangarøy in Hysvær, five nautical miles northwest of Vega. The island will be used for education, outreach and training.
The foundation wants to use the island as a "classroom" for children and young people who can learn about working with the eider bird tradition, cultural landscape management and building conservation, life on the shore and the sea. The aim is for it to be used by pupils from both the municipality and neighboring municipalities, for older young people, for courses and for visiting artists.
Gangarøy is about 30 acres in size and there is currently a farmhouse and jetty on the island. Around the island there are the foundations of several houses, a barn, a boathouse, a cellar and an eider house.
The family of the sellers of Gangarøy moved away in the 1980s and the houses have not been used since.
The restoration of the buildings started in 2023 and the goal is to be completed in 2025. Permission and funding will be sought for the reconstruction of several buildings that can be used for teaching and courses.
The purchase was financed with a grant of NOK 3.6 million from Nordland County Council - Cultural Heritage in Nordland.
